Trying to understand how the NDIS (the National Disability Insurance Scheme) system works can be difficult… and it’s been a whole new world (we’re breaking into song here – who doesn’t love a good Disney tune?!) for us at The Benevolent Society as well, so we know how you feel. Not everyone likes change, because change can move us out of our comfort zone and even though we believe that the NDIS will work better for people with disability in the long term, it’s still hard to change from the old way of doing things.
We’ve all got used to the old model of delivering disability services that was a little like “If you want this service you need to go to this provider to get it”, with little choice and no real control over when, where and how your services were provided. On the upside you didn’t have to worry about finding someone to provide that service yourself, and then keep track of hours and budgets and worry about whether you had enough funding.
But the real game changer of the NDIS is that now you get to choose services that really support your personal goals, and you’re in charge of who provides them. You can decide how and when you want your services, and if your old provider can’t meet your needs, you can keep looking until you find someone who can. What’s not to like?
Hmmm well – this is all very good in theory…but in real life we know that new ways of doing things can create confusion and anxiety.
